Nyabing cashes in on community crop - The West Australian:

The West Australian KENDALL O'CONNOR The West Australian January 9, 2014
It took nine headers, six chaser bins, 10 trucks and the sweat of more than 45 members of the Nyabing community throughout the year to harvest the locality's community crop. It is the second community crop and it was harvested on December 17.
The crop was organised by the Nyabing Progress Association which aims to improve the town's infrastructure and social capacities.
Association president Bradley Filmer said the 620ha barley crop yielded quite well at about 2.3 tonnes per hectare. "It all ran smoothly," he said. "Late September rain is what made the crop, its yields are better than in 2012."
It is most likely the harvested crop will consist of two-thirds feed quality and one-third malting barley.
There were concerns that the Nyabing CBH receival point would be close to capacity with only 6000 tonnes of storage left at the site.
It is estimated the association will raise $150,000 from the crop.
Mr Filmer and the association was now planning this year's community crop.
Not only does the crop boost the finances of the town, it brings the community together.
Past events and projects funded by the association include a portal theatre system and screen for the town hall, along with various social nights inclusive to community and outside areas.
"We want the people to come to the nucleus of Nyabing and get together in a family friendly venue and enjoy the luxuries of the town," Mr Filmer said.
