New State Government policy to drive changes in management of short-term accommodation

Accommodation providers will require a ‘icence to operate and advertise on online platforms.

Proposed draft planning policy, which gives direction to Western Australian local governments on managing short-term rental accommodation has been released for public comment .

One of the proposals includes a 'cap on nights' for unhosted accommodation unless development approval for holiday accommodation is granted.

Under a proposed registration system, being investigated by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, providers of short-term rental accommodation within Western Australia would be required to register their property to operate and advertise, including on online booking platforms.

The proposed policy may have marked implication on the way currently small tourist accommodation providers, including AirBnBs can operate. Have your say after reviewing the draft policy at https://consultation.dplh.wa.gov.au/tourism-position-statement/
